On the North Side of Chicago, along the banks of the Chicago River, sits the Horween Leather Co. Horween has been making some of the world's best leather here since 1905. Horween is well-known for making shell cordovan, an equine leather which you find in ultra-expensive men's dress shoes, but Horween also makes the leather used in NBA basketballs and NFL footballs. When you watch an NBA or NFL game, you're looking at a leather ball made of Horween leather.
Leather making is truly an art form, and many of the people at Horween have been there for decades. Because Horween makes such amazing leather - and because it's located just a few miles from us here in Chicago - it was an obvious choice to use it for our leather sheaths.
But it goes deeper than that for us. We've been to Horween many times and know the people there. We've seen the stages of the leather making process and the vintage machinery they use; we've smelled the leathers, and talked with the guys making them. For us, there is an emotional bond to Horween that's hard to describe. That's why, fittingly, not only do we use Horween leather, but we even have a company started by two Horween employees, Ashland Leather, cut and sew the sheaths for us.
